Where We Actually Eat – The Casa España Local Guide

Casa España Journal – Discover the Real Andalusia

One of the pleasures of staying in Cómpeta is that you don't have to leave the village to eat well.

For a relatively small pueblo blanco in the mountains of the Axarquía, Cómpeta has a remarkably varied restaurant scene – from traditional Spanish cooking and grilled meats to Mediterranean cuisine and relaxed breakfasts.

But this isn't intended to be another anonymous list of every restaurant in town.

These are five places we know, enjoy and recommend to guests staying at Casa España.

And one piece of advice before we begin:

Reserve your table.

Especially during weekends, holidays and the summer season, we recommend booking ahead. Casa España guests are welcome to ask us for help – we'll gladly make restaurant reservations for you.

1. Casa Paco – Dinner in the Heart of Cómpeta

If you want to combine dinner with the atmosphere of Cómpeta's historic centre, Casa Paco is an obvious place to start.

The restaurant sits directly on Plaza Almijara, the social heart of the village.

That location is part of the experience.

Arrive a little early, walk through the old streets, have a drink around the plaza and watch village life unfold before dinner.

Why we recommend it

  • Location: Plaza Almijara

  • Good for: relaxed dinner, village atmosphere, first evening in Cómpeta

  • Casa España tip: arrive before sunset and spend some time around the plaza before dinner.

2. Cortijo Paco – For a Special Evening

When our guests ask for something a little more special, Cortijo Paco is one of the restaurants we recommend.

Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meats and a wine selection are complemented by views towards the mountains of the Axarquía.

And then there's sunset.

The terrace makes this a particularly attractive choice for an evening when you want to take your time.

Why we recommend it

  • Style: Mediterranean cuisine and grilled meats

  • Good for: couples, celebrations and a longer dinner

  • Casa España tip: request a terrace table around sunset when weather permits.

Our choice for a special evening in Cómpeta.

3. El Pámpano – A Favourite for Dinner

El Pámpano has established a strong reputation in Cómpeta for Mediterranean and international cooking.

It's particularly suited to an evening when the food itself is the main event rather than simply somewhere to stop between activities.

Located on Avenida de Nerja, it's a restaurant worth planning ahead for.

Why we recommend it

  • Good for: dinner

  • Style: Mediterranean and international

  • Casa España tip: reserve rather than relying on finding a table spontaneously.

4. El Pilón – An Established Cómpeta Classic

Hidden among the streets of Cómpeta, El Pilón is another of the village's established dining addresses.

It's on Calle Laberinto – an appropriately Cómpeta-like address.

The restaurant offers an intimate village dining experience and is a good choice for an evening in the historic centre.

Why we recommend it

  • Good for: an evening meal

  • Atmosphere: intimate village dining

  • Casa España tip: combine dinner with an evening walk through the old centre.

5. Hierbabuena – Our Breakfast Stop

Not every recommendation needs to be about dinner.

Sometimes what you need is simply a good breakfast before heading into the mountains.

That's where Hierbabuena comes in.

Located on Avenida de la Constitución, it works particularly well for breakfast, coffee or a relaxed daytime stop.

Why we recommend it

  • Our pick for: breakfast

  • Good for: coffee, relaxed mornings and daytime food

  • Casa España tip: breakfast here before setting off for a day exploring the Axarquía.

Eating in Cómpeta Is Part of the Experience

There's something we particularly like about eating in a village rather than a resort.

Dinner isn't isolated from everything else.

You walk there.

You pass neighbours talking in the street.

You stop for a drink.

You hear several languages at the tables around you.

And perhaps you finish the evening with a glass of local Moscatel.

Food becomes part of experiencing the village rather than simply another tourist activity.

Don't Forget the Moscatel

Cómpeta and the surrounding Axarquía have a long relationship with the Moscatel grape.

The vineyards on the steep slopes surrounding the village are an essential part of the cultural landscape.

So when you're eating locally, ask about wines from the Axarquía.

And if sweet wine isn't normally your thing, don't automatically dismiss it.

Try it here first.

Context matters.

Our Perfect Cómpeta Evening

If it's your first evening at Casa España, don't overcomplicate it.

Head into the village before dinner.

Walk through the narrow white streets.

Continue towards Plaza Almijara.

Have an aperitif.

Then go for dinner at one of the restaurants above.

Don't rush afterwards.

Cómpeta is especially atmospheric when the day visitors have gone and the village returns to itself.

Then head back to Casa España.

And if you're staying with us, there's another option waiting:

The private heated jacuzzi.

Warm water. Cool mountain air. No timetable.

That's a very good way to end an Andalusian evening.

Reservations – Let Us Take Care of It

This is one recommendation we make particularly strongly to Casa España guests:

Reserve your restaurant.

Opening days and hours in Spanish villages can change according to season, holidays and local events. Popular restaurants can become busy.

If you're staying at Casa España, you don't need to worry about calling around yourself.

Tell us where you'd like to eat and we'll be happy to make the reservation for you.

It's part of our approach to Casa España: more than handing over the keys.

There's deliberately no single “best restaurant in Cómpeta” here.

Different places work for different occasions.

That's why we'd rather tell Casa España guests where we'd go tonight than give every restaurant an arbitrary score.

Stay in Cómpeta – Don't Just Visit

There's another advantage to staying in the village.

You can actually enjoy the evening.

No long drive back to the coast.

No need to squeeze Cómpeta into a two-hour excursion.

Breakfast in the village.

Explore the mountains.

Come back for lunch.

Relax at Casa España.

Return to the village for dinner.

That's a very different experience from visiting Cómpeta on a day trip.
