One of the great things about staying in Cómpeta is that you don't have to choose between the mountains and the Mediterranean.
You can wake up surrounded by the mountains of the Axarquía, have breakfast overlooking the valley and, a little later, be swimming in the Mediterranean.
But which beaches are actually worth visiting?
The coastline east of Málaga offers everything from long family beaches to small coves beneath dramatic cliffs. Some are perfect for an easy beach day. Others are worth visiting for the landscape alone.
And then there are a few places we prefer not to publish online.
Here is our personal guide to the best beaches near Cómpeta and Casa the Espana.
Mountains in the Morning. Mediterranean in the Afternoon.
Cómpeta sits approximately 640 metres above sea level in the mountains of the Axarquía.
From Casa the Espana, you look across a landscape of mountains, valleys and Mediterranean vegetation.
Yet the coast is surprisingly close.
This creates one of our favourite ways to experience Andalucía:
Don't stay at the beach. Visit the beach.
Spend a few hours beside the Mediterranean, have lunch at a chiringuito, swim, explore – and then return to the peace of the mountains.
By evening, you're back at Casa the Espana with a glass of wine and the jacuzzi waiting.
That contrast is difficult to beat.
1. Playa de Burriana – Nerja
If you want an easy, classic Mediterranean beach day, Burriana Beach is one of the obvious choices.
Located in Nerja, it offers a long stretch of beach together with restaurants, chiringuitos and water activities.
It is not a secret beach.
And during summer it certainly isn't quiet.
But sometimes convenience is exactly what you want.
Best for
Swimming, families, restaurants and a relaxed full beach day.

During July and August, arrive earlier in the day. Parking and beach space become considerably more difficult later.
2. Playa de Calahonda – Beneath the Balcón de Europa
Right in the heart of Nerja lies the small Playa de Calahonda.
Its location beneath the famous Balcón de Europa makes it one of Nerja's most recognisable beaches.
This isn't necessarily where we'd spend an entire beach day.
But it works perfectly as part of a day exploring Nerja.
Walk through the old town.
Have coffee.
Visit the Balcón de Europa.
Go down to the sea.
Then find somewhere for lunch.
Sometimes the best beach experience is part of a larger day rather than the destination itself.
3. Playa de Maro – Mountains Meet the Mediterranean
Now things become more interesting.
The coastline around Maro is one of our favourite areas near Casa the Espana.
Here, steep landscapes descend towards clear Mediterranean water and the coastline becomes noticeably more dramatic.
Playa de Maro sits below the village and feels very different from the larger urban beaches around Nerja.
The combination of cliffs, vegetation and water creates a beautiful natural setting.
Best for
Swimming, kayaking, photography and travellers looking for a more scenic beach experience.
4. The Maro-Cerro Gordo Coastline
Strictly speaking, this isn't one beach.
It is an entire coastal landscape.
The protected coastline east of Maro towards Cerro Gordo contains cliffs, small coves and wonderfully clear water.
For photographers and nature lovers, this stretch of coast is considerably more interesting than conventional resort beaches.
From elevated viewpoints, the combination of rugged coastline and Mediterranean blue can be spectacular.

The middle of the day isn't always the enemy.
When the Mediterranean is clear and calm, strong overhead sunlight can produce extraordinary shades of turquoise.
5. Playa de las Alberquillas
Continue east along the coast and you begin discovering beaches that feel increasingly removed from Nerja.
Las Alberquillas offers a more natural environment without the dense urban development found around some of the larger beaches.
It is a good choice for travellers who prefer scenery and space over rows of restaurants and beach clubs.
Bring what you need.
And take everything home again.
6. Playa del Cañuelo
Playa del Cañuelo lies within the protected natural area around the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs.
The surrounding landscape is beautiful, with hills descending towards clear Mediterranean water.
Access arrangements can vary seasonally, particularly during the busy summer period, so it is worth checking current local information before travelling.
But the extra effort is precisely why places like this often feel different.
Best for
Nature, swimming, snorkelling and a slower Mediterranean day.
7. Playa de Cantarriján
Further east, close to the provincial boundary between Málaga and Granada, lies Cantarriján.
The beach sits in a dramatic natural setting surrounded by steep hills.
Its location gives it a distinctly more secluded feeling than the urban beaches closer to Nerja.
This is the kind of place where we'd plan to spend several hours rather than simply stop for a photograph.
Have lunch.
Swim.
Stay longer than planned.
That's usually a good sign.
8. La Herradura
Continue around the coast and you'll reach the beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay of La Herradura.
Technically you're now in Granada province, but it remains perfectly suitable for a coastal excursion from the Axarquía.
The bay is surrounded by hills and has a relaxed seaside atmosphere.
It is particularly attractive if you want to combine swimming with restaurants and a longer day beside the sea.
The coastline around La Herradura is also known for diving and underwater activities.
9. Almuñécar – A Different Mediterranean Day
A little further east lies Almuñécar.
This isn't a hidden beach destination.
It is a lively coastal town with multiple beaches, restaurants and a very different atmosphere from Cómpeta.
And that's precisely why it can be worth visiting.
One of the pleasures of staying in the mountains is being able to dip into coastal life whenever you want – without having to live in it for your entire holiday.
Explore Almuñécar.
Have lunch.
Walk beside the Mediterranean.
Then head back into the mountains.
10. Torre del Mar – When You Want an Easy Beach
Not every beach day needs to be an expedition.
Sometimes you want easy parking, a long beach, restaurants and somewhere to walk.
That's when Torre del Mar works.
The town has a long beachfront and plenty of places to eat.
It is also useful if you want to combine the beach with shopping or other errands on the coast.
Best for
An uncomplicated Mediterranean beach day.
11. Caleta de Vélez
Close to Torre del Mar, Caleta de Vélez has a working harbour and a more local atmosphere.
For us, the interesting part isn't simply lying on the beach.
It's combining the coast with food.
This is an excellent area to look for fresh fish and traditional coastal restaurants.
Order something from the Mediterranean.
Stay for lunch.
Then decide whether you actually need to do anything else that afternoon.
12. Algarrobo Costa
For guests staying in Cómpeta, Algarrobo Costa is another practical option when you simply want a few hours beside the Mediterranean.
It doesn't have the dramatic scenery of Maro or Cerro Gordo.
But that's not always the point.
It is accessible, relaxed and useful for a spontaneous beach afternoon.
Sometimes the best beach is simply the one you can decide to visit after breakfast.

Leave Casa the Espana after breakfast and drive towards the Mediterranean.

All are acceptable options.
Lunch
Find a chiringuito or local restaurant.
Order fish.
Take your time.
This is Andalucía.
Afternoon
Return towards Cómpeta.
Perhaps stop somewhere along the way.
Sunset
Back at Casa the Espana.
Mountains.
Jacuzzi.
A glass of Moscatel.
And suddenly the Mediterranean feels much further away than it actually is.
That's exactly why we love staying in the mountains.

For the more natural beaches, it pays to be prepared.

Warm days, beautiful light and generally fewer visitors than peak summer.

Classic Mediterranean summer.
Warm water, long days and lively beaches.
But also the busiest period.

The Mediterranean remains warm while many beaches become noticeably quieter.

Often underestimated.
Good weather can still provide beautiful beach days, particularly earlier in the month.

Not necessarily swimming weather every day.
But fantastic for coastal walks, photography and lunch beside the Mediterranean.
